What Are the Louie Awards? A Celebration of Card-Making Excellence

The Louie Awards are the premier annual competition recognizing creative excellence, design innovation, and craftsmanship in the stationery industry. Organized by the Greeting Card Association, the awards celebrate the very best in card design across dozens of categories, from humorous birthday cards to elegant sympathy notes. For designers, illustrators, and small businesses, a Louie Award win is the industry's highest professional recognition, a signal that your work stands among the most original and well-executed in the field.

At Barone & Co., we know this feeling firsthand. Our team was fortunate enough to earn FOUR Louie Awards this year, including the prestigious Rising Star award! That recognition validated what we've always believed: that quick-witted, heartfelt, and inclusive messaging on beautifully crafted paper can compete with the biggest names in the business. Below, we'll walk through the categories, the judging process, and the strategy behind winning, plus what a Louie Award actually does for a small business.

The History and Significance of the Louie Awards

The Louie Awards began as a way for the Greeting Card Association to spotlight outstanding work and raise the bar for quality across the industry. Named in honor of Louis Prang, the 19th-century printer often credited with popularizing the Christmas card in America, the awards have grown into the most anticipated night on a greeting card designer’s calendar (loc.gov).

Winning a Louie is about more than bragging rights. A win places your work in front of retailers, distributors, and media who use the awards as a curation tool for what deserves shelf space. For an independent greeting card designer, it is a shortcut to credibility that might otherwise take years to build. The significance lies in what the award represents: peer acknowledgment that your design aesthetics, paper quality, and technical execution meet the highest industry standards.

Understanding the Judging Criteria and Process

Entries are evaluated by a judging panel drawn from across the creative community, including established designers, retail buyers, and industry veterans (greetingcard.org). They assess each submission against a core set of criteria: originality, marketability, technical execution, and visual storytelling.

Originality weighs how fresh the concept feels. Marketability asks whether the card will actually sell in the retail market. Technical execution covers printing techniques, embellishments, typography, and paper quality. The judges look for cards that don't just look beautiful but also demonstrate a clear understanding of the category specifications and the audience who buys them. Submission deadlines and entry requirements vary by year, so designers should check the Greeting Card Association's official awards page for the most current details.

Rising Star Award Criteria: Celebrating New Designers

The Rising Star Louie Award is dedicated to the celebration of emerging talent. The criteria are specific: entrants must have been in business for three years or less (greetingcard.org). This category exists to cheer on the newest voices in the industry - those whose raw originality and great craftsmanship capture real emotions. We were beyond thrilled to take home this year’s Rising Star Award for the 5-card collection below!

The Greeting Card Association said we have “incredible new energy,” “fresh creativity,” and a “fun perspective.” They called Barone & Co. “one to watch,” and said we’ll “shape the future of the card-giving industry.” Wow!!

Louie Award Categories

The Louie Awards celebrate the incredible range of creativity found across the greeting card industry, with categories spanning everything from Birthday to Friendship, Congratulations, Get Well, Mother’s Day, New Baby, Sympathy, Romantic Occasions, and more. In 2026, more than 1,000 entries from 185 companies competed across 56 categories for a Louie.

We’re thrilled that Barone & Co. came away with three additional Louie Award wins in 2026: Get Well/Encouragement – Above $5.50, Non-Religious Celebrations – Above $5.50, and Superbly Stated - all shown below. Each win represents a different side of what we love to create - greeting cards that bring a little more humor, heart, and connection to life’s everyday moments.
